With the hype about corona virus and the ongoing social restrictions, illness and deaths it is hardly surprising that our eyes are focused in one direction.
I work in hospital and on one hand so little has changed for me… I get up and go to work each day, support my colleagues and look after my patients. And yet, so much has changed. Peering at my patients over the mask is not something I particularly enjoy… It’s a barrier to our communication and I can’t help feeling that they should be able to relax and have a normal conversation. It’s not the same.
The hospital is quiet in an eerie way, awaiting the inevitable influx of seriously ill patients. Some departments have been at increased work loads and capacities for weeks now. And others… You could hear the tumbleweed.. And the nervousness
It’s interesting really.. For all we complain about work it’s so important. It gives us a sense of purpose, a sense of structure.. And occasionally a sense of humour.
Some of my colleagues look like rabbits in headlights.. Perturbed by the uncertainty and their anxiety held in a furrowed brow. And whilst I appear stoical, it lingers in the back of my mind.. Will I be receiving a call.. For a funeral I can not attend
You see, I’ve been glad of this platform and its development over the past few weeks. It’s been a release, a distraction and something light hearted and yet spiritual at the same time. It’s been the ultimate in escapism
Or.. It was.. Before I started getting nuisance messages and contacted from various accounts regarding my. Security
It really struck me.. With all eyes on global events in medicine, they are removed from other areas, like crime and terrorism.
If people can attack healthcare workers for their ID badges in the hope of jumping a shipping queue (so British 😅) or having an extra hour in the morning to shop.. Or stealing items from the hospital itself.. Then it scares me to think what they can do online, from the comfort of their chosen chair.
So here I am, sharing with you in the hope that this link my also help others
Stay safe everyone–look after yourselves
